Case Study: How Our Officers De-Escalated an Incident at a 1,000-Guest Winery Event in Solvang

Taurus Protection Inc. uniformed security officers working a large outdoor event

When more than 1,000 guests gather for a day of wine, music, and celebration, most of them never think about security, and that is exactly how it should be. Behind the scenes, though, a well-run event depends on officers who are watching the crowd, managing entry, and ready to step in the moment something starts to go wrong.

This case study walks through a recent winery event in Solvang where a team of six Taurus Protection Inc. officers did exactly that, including how one officer calmly handled an intoxicated guest who became aggressive near the end of the event.

The Event

The client hosted a large winery event in Solvang, in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, with more than 1,000 guests in attendance. With alcohol being served, multiple wine vendors on site, and a crowd that size moving through the venue, the client needed a professional security presence that could keep things safe without taking away from the guest experience.

Our Role

Taurus Protection Inc. provided a team of six uniformed security officers for the event. Our team handled a range of responsibilities from start to finish, including:

  • Entry and wristbanding: checking guests in and wristbanding attendees so the client could control access and alcohol service.
  • Crowd observation: monitoring the crowd throughout the event, watching for early signs of trouble before they could escalate.
  • Visible presence: keeping uniformed officers positioned around the venue so guests and vendors knew help was close by.
  • Radio coordination: staying in constant contact over the security radio so every officer knew what was happening across the event.

The Incident

Near the end of the event, a woman began a heated verbal altercation with one of the wine vendors. One of our officers saw what was happening and moved toward the situation.

As he approached, he used command presence, the calm, confident, professional bearing that lets people know an officer is in control of the situation. The woman noticed him and quieted down.

Because she was visibly very intoxicated, the officer asked her to leave the event. Instead, she swung at the officer and began running away.

How Our Officer Handled It

Rather than chase her or answer force with force, the officer stayed composed and used verbal judo, a de-escalation technique that relies on clear, calm, respectful communication, to advise the woman to stop running.

He then put out a message over the security radio describing exactly what had just taken place, so the rest of the team was aware and the situation could be contained. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office arrived, and our officer handed the situation over to deputies, who took over from there.

The woman was arrested for intoxication and assault.

The Outcome

  • The confrontation with the vendor was stopped before it could go any further.
  • Our officer stayed professional and in control, even after being swung at.
  • The rest of the team was informed in real time over the radio.
  • Law enforcement received a clean handoff and took over the situation.
  • The event continued safely for the more than 1,000 other guests in attendance.

Why This Matters for Event Hosts

Every large event with alcohol carries some risk. What separates a minor incident from a serious one is how security responds in the first few seconds. At this Solvang event, our officer showed the qualities we train for at Taurus Protection Inc.:

  • Presence first: a professional, visible officer often calms a situation before a single word is spoken.
  • De-escalation over force: clear communication keeps guests, vendors, and officers safer.
  • Communication: radio updates keep the whole team informed and coordinated.
  • Knowing when to hand off: when a situation crosses into criminal behavior, a smooth handoff to law enforcement is the right call.

The best event security is the kind most of your guests never notice, because problems are handled quickly, quietly, and professionally.
